Jew Hung Loong has been doing martial arts for the most part of his life. Both his father and older brother were black belts in Karate, and they were his main inspiration to travel along the same path. He started with Karate, then moved on to Tai Mantis, and eventually on to Tai Kwan Do, all before the age of 13. Still, none of these styles were what he was searching for, so he quit the lessons and sticking to his street fighting abilties for the time being.

After moving from the Mission district to the Sunset district, Sifu McCarthy eventually joined the Tien Loong Gung Fu Club which was basically just across the street from where he lived. Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut was exactly what he was looking to study.

As a child Sifu Frank grew up around Latino’s, African American’s, and Asians, and rarely any Caucasians. However, outside of the Mission District there was an obvious rift between Chinese and Non Chinese. Sifu McCarthy had no idea that the usual case Chinese Gung Fu schools would turn away non Chinese from learning Chinese martial arts. Because of this he knew it would only take time before they (the Chinese at the Tien Loong Gung Fu club) accepted him since he wasn’t your typical “CAUCASIAN.” It was the same way for him while living in the Mission District where he would actually get into a lot of street fights for not being a so-called minority. In that type of situation he learned how to adapt and blend into his surroundings, eventually becoming a product of his environment.

However, over time the Chinese disciples under Grand Master Salvatera slowly began to accept him. Since Sifu McCarthy lived on the same street, he stopped hanging out with street thugs and devoted all his time (outside of High School) to practicing gung fu.

Unfortunately, a couple of years later Sifu McCarthy’s younger brother was struck by a car and put into a coma for 2 weeks. Mixed with the passing of Sifu McCarthy’s mother, then the accident with his younger brother, these tragic incidences cause their family to split up and Sifu McCarthy and his brother were placed into Foster Homes until they were 18 years old.

For Sifu McCarthy this unfortunate situation eventually took him too far tocontinue his training under Grand Master Salvatera. But, until that time he would do what ever it took to make it to class and participate in the Lion Dances. During his time away from the Tien Loong Gung Fu Club, Sifu McCarthy was spreading Choy Lee Fut’s name whereever he was living. But the time away from the gung fu studio cause Sifu McCarthy to get involved with street gangs where he used and refined the gung fu he already learned.

Meanwhile, Sifu Frank hooked up with a couple of friends who were also martial artists, all from different styles. Although he couldn’t actively practice at the Tien Loong Gung Fu Club he practiced everything he learned and stayed only with the Choy Lee Fut style. Whenever he and his two friends (Harry Salas and Alan Bartolome) got together it was nonstop sparring no matter where they were be it in the kitchen, living room, in a mall, or even out in the streets. “We used go out cruising and we’ be throwing punches at each other in the car until we got to a red light. Then the cars doors would swing open and all 3 of us would spill out into the streets in a flurry of kicks and punches. People who saw this was like ‘what the hell? Then we’d just pile into the car when the light turned green and keep on going until the next light and it would start all over again. That is one of the reasons we became known as the 3 Deadly Dragons” adds Sifu McCarthy.

In 1987 only two months after turning 19 years old sifu McCarthy was involved in a serious accident where he ended up paralyzed from the waist down resulting from a 50 ft fall. He broke 3 parts of his back, almost died within the first 3 hours of surgery, and was told he would never walk again. This tore him up inside because aside from walking, he would never be able to practice gung fu again, which for him was even more devestating news.

Still, Sifu McCarthy has been a survivor since childhood, and turning to his figther within along with Mental Gung Fu, a form of meditation that originally was meant to aid him in memorizing his gung fu techinqiues he managed to revive his legs and did what everyone believed he wouldn’t. On January 11, 1988 he walked out of that hospital in only two of the expected 6 month recovery stay there, turning all of his doctors into liars.

Around 1991, Sifu McCarthy’s recovery from his accident had come to a stand still. He walked with two canes and literally was taking one step at a time. His recovery wasn’t moving fast enough so he decided that gung fu was going to become his savior. On the two canes, he returned to the Tien Loong Gung Fu Club and asked regardless of his physical condition to be let back into the school. Grand Master Salvatera then took him personally under his wing and foresaw all of his training first hand. The first stage of Grand Master Salvatera’s plan was to start over from scratch, and made him practice the various Choy Lee Fut horses which eventually began to rebuild the strength in his legs as well as stability. Then it was the running horses mixed along with the Hung Sing Chut Sing Kuen stances which slowly helped him to regain his mobility and the confidence to try and take it to the next level. And the final phase of Grand Master Salvatera’s plan was basically forms practice retraining him from scratch how to maneuver in the Choy Lee Fut manner.

Over time as he progressively got stronger and stronger, Sifu McCarthy began to compete against world class performers, even managing to take home a few 1st and 2nd place trophies in the process. Little did his competitors know that he wasn’t nearly ready to compete, but sifu McCarthy was determined to get back to normal as much as possible so he never let them know about his condition.

Sometime in the mid 1990’s Sifu McCarthy earned the title of Sifu under Grand Master Dino Salvatera. Ever since, he has worked hard at promoting Professor Lau Bun’s legacy by reaching out to other Hung Sing Kwoon’s around the world, reminding them that they still had one of their own in America. According to Sifu McCarthy, the Hung Sing Lineage in America was locked away tightly within the walls of Chinatown, behind the scenes and out of sight from the non-chinese public for decades, so no one outside of San Francisco really ever knew we existed, especially in Asia until I began my co-respondance.

In the mean time Sifu McCarthy began teaching small groups of people. Included in his students was a man named Henry who is in a wheel chair, partially paralyzed from the neck down, whose dream was to learn martial arts but because of his handicap believed it would never happen. Henry couldn’t open his hands so Sifu McCarthy worked with his limitations and taught him to use the crane techniques, elbows, upper cuts and even sow choys, as well as various blocking techniques. This lineage is responsible for being the very first gung fu school to be established on American soil (circa 1921), specifically teaching the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut system. Today its the oldest existing school of chinese gung fu in the United States.

GM Salvatera was born in San Francisco’s Chintatown at the Chinese Hospital. He was born in 1945, and raised during a very racially turbulent period in America’s history. Westerners didn’t take too kindly to Asians, and often mistreated them. And since GM Salvatera was of a racially mixed background, and physically smaller than most his own age, he often had to defend himself from bullies of all walks of life.

Due to the circumstances, GM Salvatera had to become a fighter from a very young age. Many of his friends were already in street gangs, which was very common within the inner city. It was in 1958 in fact that through one of his friends who was a student of Professor Lau Bun that GM Salvatera received his first exposure to the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut system.

Professor Jew Leong was the 1st inheritor of Professor Lau Bun’s Hung Sing Kwoon. And after the passing of Master Bing Chan, GM Salvatera and a group of his classmates decided they wanted to continue their gung fu training, and chose Professor Jew as their new sifu. This way they never went outside the family to keep up with their learning.

After shaking off the after effects of his former life, GM Salvatera chose to delve into learning gung fu full time. Under Professor Jew, he trained every day for at least 4-5 hours a day, even if no one else showed up. It was appearant that gung fu began to take on a positive role in his life. Instead of going out and getting into trouble, he would focus on refining and perfecting his gung fu religiously.

Over time, GM Salvatera was becoming the main attraction in Hung Sing street peformances held all over the San Francisco bay area. Some of his more notable peformances were when he demonstrated the Kwan Do, Double Hatchets, or even his 5 animal internal form.

In 1970, at the age of 25, Salvatera began to privately teaching with his first student (Yusef Hannibal). But his reputation as a good teacher grew, and many wanted to come and learn from GM Salvatera. Over time, the demand was so great GM Salvatera decided he would need a bigger place to teach. So, at the advice of his first student, he began teaching members of the Black Muslims, the Black Panthers, and other youths and adults at the Famous Glyde Memorial Church. At the same time, he was teaching San Francisco’s version of the “Red Guard” at the old historical Hungry I.

Approximately 1975, with the encouragement of his students and friends, Salvatera opened his own school in the Sunset District in San Francisco, calling it the “Tien Loong Gung Fu Club”. Although he had his own group of student now Salvatera continued to make it a point to keep returning to Professor Jew to study at the Hung Sing Studio as often as he could and regularly returned to assist his Sifu in supervising all the lion dance performances.

A milestone in GM Salvatera’s martial arts career happened at the turn of the century when he and a small group of students travelled to China to uncover their roots by visting the birthplace of Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut. Not knowing what to expect, GM Salvatera and his students intended to make a good impression on the members of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon, and set up a little demonstration where the elders of the Fut San HSK instantly recognized Professor Lau Bun’s Gung Fu as true and authentic, directly coming from Fut San.

The very next year in October of 2001, GM Salvatera and his school was invited back to participate in the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon’s 150′th anniversary celebration where he and a couple of his students were directly involved in the opening ceremonies at one of the original Hung SIng Kwoon’s which was owned by Tong Sek. At the same time he and his students were presented with a rare opportunity of taking new sifu’s from the birthplace itself.

In October of 2001 Grand Master Salvatera was instrumental in re-introducing Professor Lau Bun and the long forgotten son (Yuen Hai) to the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon who in turn welcomed Grand Master Salvatera back into the family with open arms re-installing Lau Bun to his rightful place in the family tree of the original Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon. Since then he (GM Salvatera) continously returns to Fut San to train under his sifu Ho Cheuk Wah. Gm Salvatera not only teaches Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut from the Lau Bun and Chan Ngau Sing lines, outside of China he is the only person teaching Choy Lee Fut from the Wong Sei lineage in the United States.

The Green Grass Monk for a long time has been at the center of many heated discussions. Ever since the founding of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon in 1851, the Green Grass Monk has always been part of the Fut san Hung Sing lineage since he was Jeong Hung Sing’s last sifu, the one who completed his training.

Now, there are many members of the Chan Family of Choy Lee Fut who’ve completely dismissed the existance of the Green Grass Monk, calling him a fictional character that the Hung Sing Kwoon has made up to elevate themselves within the Choy Lee Fut family tree going back to Chan Heung. And, personally, I’ve contacted a certain master within the Chan Family branch of Choy Lee Fut in regards to learning more about the Green Grass Monk. The response i received was summarized as follows: “There are no records anywhere in the Chan Family scripts that mention the Green Grass Monk. He just didn’t exist.”

However, the Fut San Hung Sing lineage has always maintained that Chan Heung sent Jeong Yim to the Green Grass Monk. This information hadn’t been passed down to us by some fictional story by Nim Fut San Yan. The history of our lineage has always been passed down by word of mouth by those who were too iliterate to write their own names. Sometimes, they didn’t even know when they were born.

According to Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon caretaker Huang Shenjiang, right after the Japanese invasion, Ancestor Tablets were found amongst the rubble in front of destroyed Hung Sing Kwoons which had the Green Grass Monk’s name on it. Also, China’s Premier Zhou Enlai instructed Hung Sing disciple Chen Yilin to include the Green Grass Monk’s name when writing the history of the Hung Sing Kwoon 100 years beginning to end.

Now, further research has uncovered bits and pieces of this incredibly elusive monk.
Still, the Green Grass Monk has been mentioned within such styles as Shaolin, and Hung Ga. Both have placed the Green Grass Monk at the Southern Shaolin Temple, as the Abbott of Shaolin right after Gee Sim Sim See passed away. To learn more about this information click here. Various websites such as this one Click Here
refers to the Green Grass Monk as the man in charge of the Wooden Men Chambers as well as being the Abbott of Shaolin.

The Shaolin Temple also has the Green Grass Monk’s alias as Xing Yin. Certain elder masters of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon believe the Green Grass Monk to be Cai Dezhong, who was a monk at the Shaolin Temple and later became known as the founder of the Hung Mun secret society. Yet, its extremely possible that they are one and the same, and evidence shows that Cai Dezhong existed in the late 1700’s.

Being that Cai Dezhong was one of the 5 Hung Mun Ancestors, and the Fact that the Green Grass Monk changed Jeong Yim’s name to Jeong Hung Sing which means Hung Victory, a secret reference to the Hung Mun winning in their attempt at overthrowing the Ching Empire is a step closer to discovering the truth.

Now, in 1841 when Jeong Yim located the Green Grass Monk, it was in ShenJiang, at the Pak Pai Mountain. The Green Grass Monk then proceeded to teach Jeong Yim one very important hand form. It was called Inside/Outside Bagua Kuen. But, that form was later broken up into three forms by Chan Ngau Sing to make learning a little easier for the newer generation of students who wanted to learn very fast.

As well, Jeong Yim never passed down the idea that the Green Grass Monk had any notable scars of identifying marks. But this is where our issues begin.

A few years back, I got onto the Kungfumagazine.com forum and started a discussion about the Green Grass Monk. Many Choy Lee Fut students begin arguing and things were getting out of control. But one benefit from all the mess that took place was my discussion caused many Choy Lee Fut disciples to ask their sifu’s about the Green Grass Monk.

Then, much to the surprise of ALL the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon disciples, a certain gung fu master made a statement that a mistake was made in the translation, and actually the Green Grass Monk is really Choy Fook, Chan Heung’s 3rd teacher. This announcement set the Choy Lee Fut family on their ears. It was completely shocking to hear that after almost 200 years, and browsing through the family manuals that NO ONE ever read that the Green Grass Monk was Choy Fook?!?!

Well, what happened? At first Chan Family members completely denied the Green Grass Monk for decades, but only when his name raised up so much attention, did the Chan Family shockingly make that claim of Choy Fook being Ching Cho. No way. Now, everywhere i read on the net (in chinese mainly) that Choy Fook is the Green Grass Monk.

Choy Fook lived on Mt. Lau Fu, and had a scar on his head after it got burned while escaping from the temple’s destructioin. In fact, Choy Fook’s nickname was Lan Tau Fook or Burned Head Fook.

Now, knowing that very specific information about Choy Fook, there’s one big problem with him being the Green Grass Monk. One, is the Green Grass Monk was on Mt. Pak Pai in ShenJiang, not Mt. Lau Fu. While, the other issue was that the Green Grass Monk was never said to have such telltale scars like that of Choy Fook. Another contradiction is the Green Grass Monk is known to have been a Fut Ga master, while nowhere could that have been said about Choy Fook.

Okay, in the history of our branch, Jeong Yim went back to King Mui and shared what he learned from the Green Grass Monk with Chan Heung. This made Jeong Yim a “founder” of Choy Lee Fut, or perhaps even co-founder. It was at that point that the two separately developed their respective systems. Chan Heung kept his stuff for his family, while Jeong Yim took the Lee Ga from Lee Yau San, the early stages of Chan Heung’s Choy Lee Fut, and Fut ga and founded his own version called Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut.

(Still under construction)

His parents were killed and he was under the care of his uncle Jeong Kwan. Starting at a very young age, Jeong Yim had a passion for learning the martial arts. His first teacher was the Shaolin Monk Lee Yau San-master of the Lee Ga system- and who is said perhaps to have been a disciple of Lee Sik Hoi-one of the 5 ancestors of the Hung Mun secret Society.

The government was after Jeong Yim for as we say “dodging the draft.” The government was trying to recruit him in the military and Jeong Yim didn’t want to go. And if things weren’t bad enough, his uncle Jeong Kwan had to leave town on business and wouldn’t be able to take his young nephew with him. So, he came up with the idea of paying his old friend in King Mui a visit. His friend was a gung fu master and founder of a new fighting system. Hoping that his old friend could take in the young Jeong Yim, they set out for King Mui’s Chan Village.

Upon their arrival in King Mui, the two were met by Chan Heung, the chief gung fu instructor there. Jeong Kwan explained their situation but was faced with the unfortunate fact that those without the Chan Surname were allowed to reside in their village much less learn their gung fu. But Jeong Kwan pleaded until Chan Heung devised a plan. He was able to take in the young boy, but only in the capacity of a groundskeeper. However, the young Jeong Yim wasn’t allowed to learn the gung fu from their village. An agreement was made and in 1836, Jeong Kwan left his young nephew with Chan Heung.

During his daily chores, the young Jeong Yim watched as the students practiced their gung fu. Since he already was accomplished by the age of 12, he was able to pick up Chan Heung’s Choy Lee Fut rather quickly. At the time, Choy Lee Fut was based off of the styles taught by Monk Choy Fook, and Lee Yau San. Jeong Yim was already familiar with the Lee Ga system, which ironically they shared the same sifu. So at night time while everyone was sleeping, Jeong Yim would practice his stolen gung fu until he was caught in the act by Chan Heung.

It’s obvious that Chan Heung saw the great potential in Jeong Yim because for the next 5 years this late night training continued. Everything went smoothly during this time, but the one time Chan Heung went away, his senior disciples decided to point their attention at the outsider Jeong Yim. Believing Jeong Yim didn’t know gung fu at all, the senior disciples ultimately got Jeong Yim to fight them. Unfortunately for them, Jeong Yim whooped them pretty badly. This forced the parents of the senior students to order Chan Heung to kick out the outsider.

Reluctantly, Chan Heung asked Jeong Yim to leave, but not before instructing him to go to the Pak Pai Mountain and locate a Shaolin Monk there to complete his training. So, in 1841, Jeong Yim left for ShenJiang and found the Monk Ching Cho Wo Serng (Green Grass Monk) at the Pak Pai Mountain. He was accepted as a student and for the next 8 years (1841-1849) Jeong Yim learned the deadly art of Fut Gar Kuen.

Monk Ching Cho or Green Grass Monk was a famous monk from the Shaolin Temple. In fact, at some point he was even the Abbott of the temple. After the destruction of the Southern Temple, Monk Ching Cho (who is also believed Tsai Te Chung-one of the 5 ancestors of the Hung Mun) helped establish the Hung Mun Secret society. Therefore, the Green Grass Monk not only taught Jeong Yim gung fu, but he instilled the revolutionary spirit within him.

Once Jeong Yim’s gung fu training was complete, the Green Grass Monk changed Jeong Yim’s name to Jeong Hung Sing, which translates into Hung Mun Victory. He then instructed Jeong Hung Sing to go to Fut San, contact the Hung Mun branch there, and offer his school to help train their revolutionary fighters. For the next two years Jeong Hung Sing intensely trained his student strictly for combat. In 1851, Jeong Hung Sing responded to the launching of the Tai Ping rebellion by organizing all his Hung Sing Kwoons throughout southern China and formally established his Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon.

Just prior to this, Jeong Hung Sing returned to King Mui where Chan Heung warmly welcomed him back. In their meetings, Jeong Hung Sing shared what he learned from the Green Grass Monk with Chan Heung. But when Jeong Hung Sing Returned to Fut San, he and Chan Heung began to separately develop the style of Choy Lee Fut. While Chan Heung’s Choy Lee Fut is based off of the Choy and Lee Ga styles, with Fut attached at the end to represent their shaolin and buddhist roots, Jeong Hung Sing’s Choy Lee Fut was developed based off his teachings from Lee Yau San, Chan Heung, and Mong Ching Cho Wo Serng. In essence, Jeong Hung Sing put the “FUT” in Choy Lee Fut.

In no time at all after the launching of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon, the effectiveness of Jeong Hung Sing’s fighting style quickly spread throughout southern China like wildfire. He was pretty busy with the fact that he was the founder of a new Choy Lee Fut system, training freedom fighters, defeating all challengers, and running from the law. Because the Hung in his name was the same as that of the Hung Mun, the government was after him, and closed down his school on more than one occasion. Each time, Jeong Hung Sing and his disciples re-opened Hung Sing Kwoons elsewhere.

Jeong Hung Sing had many, many students. But three of his oldest disciples were Lui Chun, Lee Yan, and Yuen Hai. Other students included Tham Lup, Jeong Sam Bing, Wong Sei, Chun Mien, Lee So, Wong Fook, and Chan Ngau Sing. Senior disciple Lui Chun went on to produce Tam Sam-who became the founder of the Choy Lee Fut Buk Sing lineage. Through Lee Yan’s line the Singapore Hung Sing Kwoon was established, and Yuen Hai produced Lau Bun who became the founder of the first gung fu school on the american continent, as well as the first Hung Sing Kwoon established there.

Then in 1864, the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon was closed down once again. This time, Jeong Hung Sing fled to Hong Kong where he stayed until 1967. In that year, he returned to Fut San when he believed things had coolded down and re-opened his Hung Sing Kwoon. At this point, Jeong Hung Sing had to change the “Hung” in his name to something tha sounded similar but had a different mearning. The new Hung used mean Wild Goose, yet in Chinese Culture the Goose represents longevity and could perhaps be another secret meaning of Long Live the Hung Mun.

Evidence of Jeong Hung Sing’s involvement with the Hung Mun is found in a number of places. The first is found in the pair of couplets ALL Hung Sing kwoon’s use. The left side reads, “A strong fist releases out like a tiger raising its head” while the right side reads, “A graceful staff flies above like a dragon whipping its tail.” Now, when you string the first two words of each couplet together, it means “Hero” as in revolutionary hero. Another link is found in the set up of Jeong Yim’s alter. A true Hung Mun based school will have the alter, a table in front of it, and two chairs. One is for the master, and the other is for his top disciple.

The next confirmation to the connection to the Hung Mun is the following which was discovered on the front of walls of Jeong Hung Sing’s school.

“大鹏展翼反天手，魁星踢斗清名留，拱拜五湖复四海，日月拱照万世流”
  the first line reads:

The big bird spreads its wings like an overturned hand

The Second is:

the scholar who excels so much that his name or fame will remain forever

the third reads:

Salutations to the brothers in the 5 lakes and four seas or four corners

the fourth reads:

the sun will shine brilliantly for generations

( CERTAIN WORDS IN THESE LINES WHEN STRUNG TOGETHER WILL FORM THE HUNG MUN SECRET SOCIETY SLOGAN “FAN CHING FU MING” WHICH
TRANSLATES INTO “OVERTHROW THE CHING, RESTORE THE MING”)

Jeong Hung Sing continued to develop his Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut and training freedom fighters for the rest of his life. His successor-Chan Ngau Sing-didn’t come into the picture until 1883 when Jeong Hung Sing was about 60 years old. According to material passed down from the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon, Yuen Hai was responsible for recruiting Chan Ngau Sing, whom, at first was extremely skeptical of Jeong Hung Sing. He felt that he was actually better than this old gung fu master. However, the old Jeong Hung Sing matched up with Chan Ngau Sing and advised him to pay attention, because he’s going to fall first the to the east, then to the west, and finally down the center.

At the end of three quick rounds, Jeong Hung Sing honored his word, and Chan Ngau Sing landed exactly where Jeong Hung Sing, this old dying relic, predicted he would. Chan Ngau Sing learned the hard way that this old master really was one of southern China’s greatest fighters and requested to be taken as a disciple.

In 1893, Jeong Hung Sing came down with an illness, and Chan Ngau Sing tried to take him to see his own personal doctor. However, Jeong Hung Sing, founder of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon passed away due to this illness. As it’s passed down within the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon, Jeong Hung Sing left behind his wife (Chan Kay) and his two sons who died pretty young themselves. Chan Ngau Sing from that point on became the next inheritor of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon.

Master Yuen Hai was one of the very first students of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon.
It is believed that he was born around 1821 and came from vietnam, or somewhere from South East Asia. His martial arts background began back in his homeland, where he often got into a lot of trouble. Being gifted athletically as a child he naturally excelled in martial arts quickly. But he had a hot temper and got into a lot of street fights.
By the time he turned 18 years old he was wanted by the police for viciously beating someone up. The police were hot on his trail, Yuen Hai needed to go into hiding to avoid prosecution. So he left his homeland and eventually found himself in Fut San, China. For the time being he felt this place would be good to start over until things cooled down back home.

Yuen Hai came across the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon, and instantly wanted to go in and challenge the sifu. Little did he know he was about to fight Jeong Yim, who defeated Yuen Hai easily 3 straight times, and each time was literally tossed out of the studio by Jeong Yim.

Shocked and amazed at the fighting prowess of Jeong Yim, Yuen Hai admitted defeat and begged to be accept him as a student. He was accepted into the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon, and began learning Hung Sing Kuen. He was there side by side with Jeong Yim through every time the government closed down their school and tried to arrest all the Hung Sing Kwoon members, and was one of the lucky ones to escape the clutches of the Manchu by fleeing to Hong Kong.

While in Hong Kong, Yuen Hai began teaching Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut to many members of various workers unions, while a good number of his students were Longshoreman, who are universally known to be very tough people.

Yuen Hai and his classmate Chan Ngau Sing were very close friends. Chan Ngau Sings business wasn’t doing to well so he decided to go to Hong Kong and stay with Yuen Hai for a short time. But sometime after that Chan Ngau Sing had flee back into China because he had gotten drunk in Hong Kong and managed to beat the hell out of a British Police officer, and was now a wanted fugitive.

It was not known if Chan Ngau Sings actions in Hong Kong brought any negative attention on Yuen Hai’s school in Kowloon, but one afternoon Yuen Hai was approached by 4 local gung fu masters who all challenged him to a fight to the death. Armed with a pair of butterfly short swords and adhering to the Hung Sing rule of “never backing down from a enemy” he accepted the challenge and proceeded to fight ferociously until no one was left standing. He then had to close his school and go into hiding, fleeing to Canton where he tried to live the rest of his life peacefully.

Yuen Hai was living with his wife who was said to be a well known Northern Stylist, until one day a young man named Lau Bun came knocking on his door looking for him. Lau Bun explained that he had heard of his reputation, and was hoping he could learn the
Choy Lee Fut system from such a great master. However, Yuen Hai explained to Lau Bun that he only wanted to live a nice quite life, and politely declined his request.

Lau Bun wasn’t set to take no for an answer and offered to take him into his own home and pay for his room and board if he agreed to teach him. Eventually Yuen Hai agreed, moved he and his wife into Lau Buns home, where he taught Lau Bun authentic Fut San Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut until his death around the early 1900’s. Lau Bun was his final student. Master Yuen Hai’s body is reported to be buried in Fut San within a small Hung Sing Cemetery.

Note: Outside of Professor Lau Buns Hung Sing Branch, information about Yuen Hai was extremely hard to come by. His memory, along with so many other masters have began to fade away with the years. Many times our search to learn more on Yuen Hai hit brick walls.

But thanks to Grand Elder Lun Chee-the oldest living student of Tam Sam, Chia Yan Soon-the Jeorng Moon Yan of the Singapore as well as his trusted disciple Alfred Poon. Wu Soh, Sifu Leo Chu, and the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon for aiding us in our search because since then information on Yuen Hai has resurfaced and his name will once again be added and remembered throughout the Choy Lee Fut fraternity.
He started learning gung fu (Hung Ga) as a kid. However, he switched over to the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut system after losing a friendly match of skills with one of his friends. Professor Lau’s friend was a student of Yuen Hai, who was apart of the oldest group of senior disciples of Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon founder Jeong Yim. When Professor Lau was young he was determined to become a disciple of the elder Yuen Hai.

Yuen Hai and his wife was moved into Lau Bun’s Toi San home where he began to teach the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut system to his newest disciple. Eager to learn, Lau Bun absorbed as much of the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut system as he could, including herbal medicines.

Lau Bun was taught the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut system as it was developed during his time. Yuen Hai’s wife turned out to be part of a famous northern stylist family but she never had a student to pass on her gung fu to. Yuen Hai Si-Mo chose Lau Bun to pass on a traditional Shaolin form called Um Ying Kuen (5 Animals) which is still passed on today through Grand Master Doc Fai Wong, Grand Master Dino Salvatera, and Sifu Frank McCarthy.

For some time, he resided in Los Angeles and recognized that there was no one teaching gung fu within the Chinese Community there. During his stay, he began to teach Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut in Southern California when there were no other gung fu teachers in America at that time.

At the time, there was a well known chinese benevolent association set up in the United States to assist their newly arriving countrymen. Lau Bun also joined this association where he was eventually brought to San Francisco. This benevolent association then hired Lau Bun to be their Chief Gung Fu instructor-amongst other duties. So, between 1931 to 1939 Lau Bun began privately teaching the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut system in America. And also just like in Los Angeles, Lau Bun was the only gung fu master in the whole San Francisco bay area until the likes of Wong Ark Yuey, and T.W. Wong.

In 1939, the demand for learning gung fu rose, and Lau Bun officially opened- to the Chinese Community only- the first established gung fu school on American soil. At first he called his school Wah Kue (Strong Chinese), but later changed it to reflect the schools true lineage. In fact, Lau Bun was also responsible for establishing the first American Branch of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon.

Being raised during the era of the Ching, Lau Bun was the type to remain in the background, unseen and hidden within the shadows. For him, it brought less attention and drama. Over time within the martial arts community, Lau Bun began to gain an underground sort of fame, often referred to as being a part of a rare breed of “authentic gung fu masters.” Many had come to pay their repect, others came in hopes of learning, ALL left with the same responce….”the Real Deal!”

However, Lau Bun had a strict rule against teaching outsiders (anyone non chinese). But, from time to time he may have bent the rules a bit. Waiting for confirmation are stories of how there were a few NON Chinese Lau Bun did teach, like the legendary actor Anthony Quinn. Yet Masters like Ed Parker, Adriano Emperado, and even Ralph Castro has mentioned that Lau Bun has made some lasting effects on them, even after just one meeting. So, to return the favor, many had agreed to keep quiet about Lau Bun who didn’t want all that attention.

Still, every once in a while throughout the year, the general public would get a glimpse into part of the Chinese culture rarely shown outside the chinese community. Most Americans believe Bruce Lee to be America’s first introduction to Chinese Gung Fu. Little did they know that right in the heart of Chinatown lay the first and oldest gung school in America.

Outside of Chinatown, few had ever heard of Lau Bun. But within the confines of Chinatown, Lau Bun was a local hero. He protected Chinatown, settled disputes, and healed the sick. Within the martial arts community, he is recognized as being America’s gung fu partriarch. Unfortunately, in September of 1967 the Hung Sing and Martial arts community was hit hard by the loss of a great gung fu master when Lau Bun passed away from a massive coronary.

Under Lau Bun was some very very good martial artists. He produced such well known masters as Jew Leong, and Doc Fai Wong.
